Copyright Policy

How copyright works on Fretly, and how to report content.

Last updated: July 7, 2026 · Version 1.0 (draft)
TODO — not yet legally reviewed. This is a starter draft. Before launch: have an IP lawyer review it (Owner Actions §10a), fill every TODO below, and register a US DMCA designated agent if you have any US users.

1. Our approach

Fretly is a tool for creating and studying chord charts and fretboard diagrams. Fretboard Knowledge does not upload or provide copyrighted songs — charts and diagrams are created by users and stored on their own private accounts. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to any content you create or share through Fretly. We respect intellectual property rights and respond to valid copyright notices, as described below.

2. How to report content (notice)

If you believe content on Fretly infringes your rights, send a notice to TODO: copyright@yourdomain (or TODO: postal address). To let us act quickly, please include:

  1. Your name and contact details, and whether you are the rights-holder or authorised to act for them.
  2. Identification of the work you say is infringed.
  3. Identification of the specific content on Fretly you are reporting, with enough detail for us to locate it.
  4. A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorised by the rights-holder, the law, or otherwise.
  5. A statement that the information in your notice is accurate.
  6. Your electronic or physical signature.

US/DMCA notices: the elements above mirror those required under 17 U.S.C. §512(c)(3). Our designated agent is TODO: DMCA agent name + contact (register with the US Copyright Office).

3. What we do

On receiving a valid notice, we will expeditiously remove or disable access to the identified content, and notify the user who posted it. We may reinstate content if the user provides a valid counter-notice and the complainant does not pursue the matter further within the period required by applicable law.

4. Counter-notice and repeat infringers

If your content was removed and you believe you have the right to use it, you may send a counter-notice to the same address, identifying the content, explaining the basis for your right to use it, and providing your contact details and signature.

We operate a repeat-infringer policy: accounts that are the subject of repeated valid infringement notices may be suspended or terminated.
